NASA 50 years


The story of NASA, covering five decades of space exploration, from the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo program's of the 60s, Skylab in the 70s, space shuttle in the 80s and 90s, thru to the international space station. Includes interviews with many of the main players.

Project Mercury


Classic cold war relic looking at America’s first astronauts – the first “free men” in space. Edited NASA film from 1962, looking at the Mercury program; putting the first American astronauts into space and then the first into orbit.

Gemini Program


Project Gemini was the second NASA human spaceflight program,  with ten manned flights occurring between March 1965 and November 1966. Two men were launched with each mission, as opposed to one man in Mercury and 3  in Apollo. The video is a 8 minute edited version of an original 28 min film from the time.

Apollo 11


This video, based on NASA programs and additional still photos, follows the drama of Apollo 11; from launch through to landing on the Moon, the first steps, TV coverage, scientific experiments, and return to Earth.

Apollo Mission Highlights


The NASA Apollo program originated with President Kennedy’s aim to land a man on the Moon before the end of the 1960s. The program ran from 1961 to 1975, landing 12 men on the Moon starting with Apollo 11 in July 1969. These were the first and only times humans have left Earth’s orbit. This 16 minute video features highlights from:

Apollo 8 - the first mission ever to leave the Earth, astronauts orbited the Moon for the first time.

Apollo 13 - famous mission where part of spacecraft exploded on way to the Moon.

Apollo 15  -  first rover mission, to Hadley Rille in the mountains of the Moon.

Apollo 17 - the final mission, with a geologist made significant scientific discoveries.

Apollo- Soyuz - rendezvous with Russians in space.

Skylab Space Station


The five minute video features much of the early footage of the effects of weightlessness on astronauts as they work, exercise and perform acrobatics in the large space station. Skylab was NASA’s first space station.  The 77-tonne outpost was in Earth orbit from 1973 to 1979 and was visited by crews three times from  1973 to 1974. 

Space Shuttle


Based on a NASA video, "Astrosmiles", this is a collection of humorous incidents recorded on-board the Space Shuttle over a number of missions in the 1990s. It shows the funny things that can happen when living and working in the weightless environment of space.

International Space Station


The 14 minute video features a short section on the history of the Space Station and its development (4 min), followed by edited highlights of a tour of the Space Station (6 min) and then a music video of scenes on-board and outside the Station (4 min). The ISS is a laboratory, observatory, servicing depot and a staging base for future missions, such as human missions to Mars.

Solar System - Introduction


This nine minute video provides a good introduction to the Solar System; covering how it was formed, the Sun and each of the planets and their major moons, dwarf planets, asteroids and comets.

Mercury – Messenger


The ten minute video features a brief segment on Messenger going into orbit, then looks at images and data acquired from previous Messenger flybys.

Venus  - Express


Edited European Space Agency videos, concentrating on the discoveries made by the Venus Express space probe now in orbit around Venus, but also looks at Magellan radar views and photos of the surface revealed by Russian Venera landers.

The Earth's Moon

Mars - the Red Planet


Series of ESA and NASA programs with news of the exploration of Mars, both from orbit and rovers on the surface. Looks at: evidence of water erosion, possibility of life, rovers Spirit and Opportunity.

Jupiter – Voyager and Galileo


This 10 minute video presents images and results from the Voyager and Cassini probes to Jupiter, looking at the atmosphere, Galilean moons (including a special feature on the oceans of Europa) and the narrow rings around the planet. Jupiter is the first of the Gas Giants - enormous worlds of hydrogen and helium gas without solid surfaces. Jupiter, more massive than all the other planets combined, has a colourful, vivid atmosphere of bands and ovals.

Saturn - summary of the Ringed planet


Looks at Saturn, its rings and moons - including Enceladus with its water plumes and Titan with its lakes and surface explored by Huygens. Series of programs providing the latest news about Saturn, from NASA and European Space Agency.

The Sun – our star


A five minute video - “Our Star the Sun” - is a European Space Agency production from 2010 looking at the Sun’s main features and the past and future spacecraft sent to explore it.



This six minute video is mainly an ESA production looking at the Rosetta encounters with asteroids Steins and Lutetia, on its way to explore a comet. Also features images of the NEAR-Shoemaker landing on Eros.

Dwarf planets


Looks at the New Horizons mission to Pluto, due to arrive in 2015, and describes other Dwarf planets of the outer Solar System.



The 9 minute video provides an introduction to the various types and features of comets, then looks at the ESA Rosetta mission to a comet, and then to the Deep Impact mission to comets Tempel and Hartley 2.

Stars - an introduction


This program looks at Stars and stellar evolution. Stars are born in dark patches of gas and dust, contracting under gravity until fusion reactions begin, which will continue for billions of years. A star will then go through a period of instability, becoming a red giant or supernova. Small stars finish as white dwarfs, large stars as pulsars or black holes.

Star Birth - Nebulae


This presentation is a combination of four European Space Agency videos, giving news of the latest discoveries about star forming regions, including the proto-planetary discs (“proplyds”) found in the Orion Nebula. The programs are: 1.Star Birth bubble in the Large Magellanic cloud;  2.Eta Carinae star forming region; 3. Orion Nebula – summary and 4. Proplyds in Orion.

Star Death - nebulae


When a star can no longer fuse Hydrogen into helium, it goes through a period of instability in which it can throw off shells of material to form a planetary nebula, or - in the case of more massive stars - explode into a supernova and finish up as a pulsar or black hole. Supernovae leave behind wisps of gas called supernova remnants. This video  combines three ESA programs about star death: 1.Mass loss star in a multiple star system; 2.Supernova remnant in the Veil Nebula; and 3.Black hole at the centre of our galaxy.

Star Clusters


There are two types of star clusters. Open (or galactic) clusters are sparsely populated, fairly young groups of tens to hundreds of stars that have formed out of a nebula and that are slowly “evaporating” into space. Globular clusters are very old, densely packed groups of millions of star on the outskirts of galaxies. This program combines 3 ESA videos with news about Star Clusters: 1. Extreme star cluster; 2. Globular Clusters; 3. Omega Centauri

Exoplanets planets beyond our Solar System


One of the most exciting developments in Astronomy over the last few years has been the discovery of “extra-solar planets” or exoplanets; i.e., planets around other stars in our galaxy. Numerous exoplanets have been discovered through various techniques; they vary from objects much bigger than Jupiter down to Earth-size bodies. A combination of four videos, courtesy of ESA: 1. Galaxies - Introduction


Galaxies are huge collections of billions of stars. There are three basic types of galaxies - spiral, elliptical and irregular. The Milky Way is thought to be a spiral, or perhaps a barred spiral (ie with a bar across the nucleus). There are probably more than 170 billion galaxies in the observable universe. This three part program features; 1. Introduction to Galaxies; the various kinds; 2, A grand design spiral, M74 (ESA video); 3. A distant elliptical galaxy.

Galaxy Clusters, merging and interacting Galaxies


Galaxies are generally found in clusters. Unlike stars, which rarely come into close contact, galaxies interact often, producing spectacular sights of tangled star filaments called “tidal tales”. These three ESA videos feature many examples of merging and colliding galaxies: 1. The Leo Triplet; 2. Merging spiral galaxies; 3. Colliding Galaxies

The Cosmos


The universe is thought to have been created 13.7 billion years ago in the “Big Bang”. The Hubble Deep Field has revealed many galaxies from the early years of the universe, plus evidence of dark matter, gravitational lensing and clues to the ultimate fate of the cosmos. These three ESA videos look at: 1. Dark Matter;2. A distant fossil galaxy, the result of many collisions; 3. The most distant galaxy, found in the Hubble deep field.

The Night sky - photographing the stars


Two ESA videos telling the story of astronomers photographing the Night sky from the Atacama Desert in Chile; Features some great starfield still images and time lapse photography. Two programs:1. Burke and Wills Expedition 1860-61


Looks at the Victorian Exploring Expedition of 1860-61, led by Robert Burke. Features photos and paintings from the time.
